The Power of Candid Communication

By Patrick Sharry, Ph.D.

Effective communication is the cornerstone of successful teamwork- but yet, many teams struggle with a lack of open and honest dialogue. In fact, only 13% of their leaders practiced effective workplace communication (Gallup, 2022).There is feedback unspoken, ideas not shared, and growth not achieved. Actually, there is even a common phrase when we attempt to break the ice toward more direct feedback: “Can I speak candidly?” Candid communication, or the ability to speak freely and directly without fear of judgment or reprisal, is essential for building trust, fostering innovation, and achieving shared goals. That trust, innovation and goal achievement is critical to driving an organization forward…So why are teams not investing their attention to the root driver?

Creating a Culture of Candid Communication

Nearly 30% of the time, organizations experience low retention because of ineffective communication between management and staff members (Forbes, 2024). Building a culture of candid communication requires a concerted effort from both team leaders and individual team members. Of course, it is easier said than done. But like all good journeys, we just need to start with a single step. Here are some strategies to consider:

  • Encourage Open Dialogue: Team leaders should create a safe and supportive environment where team members feel comfortable expressing their thoughts and opinions. This can be achieved by modeling open and honest communication themselves and actively listening to the input of others.
  • Provide Feedback: Regular feedback is essential for building trust and improving performance. Encourage team members to provide feedback to each other in a constructive and respectful manner.
  • Address Conflict Directly: Conflict is a natural part of teamwork. However, it is important to address conflict directly and openly to prevent it from escalating.

The Benefits of Candid Communication

Of course, organizations want to see the payoff for their investment into communication. So what are potential outcomes?

  1. Increased Trust: When team members feel comfortable expressing their thoughts and opinions honestly, it fosters a sense of trust and respect. This trust can lead to stronger working relationships, improved collaboration, and a more positive team culture. As Harvard Business Review points out, “Trust is the foundation of high-performing teams.” (2024)
  2. Enhanced Innovation: Candid communication encourages the free flow of ideas and perspectives, which is essential for innovation. When team members feel safe sharing their thoughts without fear of judgment, they are more likely to come up with creative solutions to challenges.
  3. Improved Problem-Solving: Open and honest communication allows teams to identify and address issues more effectively. When team members feel comfortable discussing problems and challenges, they can work together to find solutions that are both practical and effective.
  4. Increased Job Satisfaction: Candid communication can lead to increased job satisfaction among team members. When people feel valued and respected, they are more likely to be engaged and motivated in their work.

Candid communication is a powerful tool that can help teams achieve their goals, build stronger relationships, and foster a more positive work environment. By creating a culture of open and honest dialogue, teams can unlock their full potential and achieve great things.
